    User roles and access

Vijay Rabadia · 2 · Last reply by Tomasz Wasiewicz

    Hi,

I'm looking for an application to help document our SQL databases and Dataedo seems to fit really well in terms of features.

I have a question regarding users that I couldn't find any more information for on the website or forums.

From what I understand, if we buy one user licence, that person would manage the application (i.e. importing data from SQL servers and databases, updating information for objects etc.) from the machine the application is installed on only.

Would we be able to access the HTML documentation and other read only information freely accessible to all other users in our team or

How do you connect all tables automatically using existing keys that are the same name?

Jaymichael · 8 · Last reply by Jaymichael

Our database has over 1000 tables.

How can I automatically link tables with the same keys (primary to foreign) that have the same name?

This will take me days--not minutes if I cannot use this tool to connect the tables.

Push tables created in dataedo to DBMS

    solalxv · 0 · Posted

Is possible to export DDL or push objects (tables, views, etc) created inside Dataedo into the DBMS?

If so how can I do it?

If is not possible, it would be very useful design tables and relationships in Dataedo and push objects into the DBMS

    Cross documentation/DB support

rromanczuk · 2 · Last reply by rromanczuk

We have multiple databases housed on the same server. They interact fairly intimately.

Currently, it's not possible when assigning modules to table to select a module that resides in a different database. While I can include it in the ERD if there is an explicitly defined relationship, it won't appear in the list of tables for the module on the UI or exported documentation.

I have tried to work around this by manually inserting rows in tables_modules. However I'm not sure if this is all that should be done or if there are other data points missing as a result

    One-to-One ERD Relationship

Paul McIlreavy · 3 · Last reply by Piotr Kononow

Is there a way to change the cardinality of the relationship between two tables? I am defining the relationship in Dataedo and it seems to add the relationship line to the diagram as a 1:M relationship and I can't see a way to change it to 1:1.

    Import automation, tag UpdateEntireDocumentation meaning?

rromanczuk · 1 · Last reply by Piotr Tokarski

I'm working on setting up automation to keep our repository update to date and came across a tag in the file that I can't find in the documentation:

    <UpdateEntireDocumentation>false</UpdateEntireDocumentation>

Can you shed some light on the purpose of this tag?

    Duplicating database documentation

adivoux · 12 · Last reply by Piotr Tokarski

    Hello,

We would like to duplicate a database's documentation (and then rename it and update its schema) in order to archive but keep available documentation for our projects' older versions. Does Dataedo allow this? I couldn't figure it out!

    Thank you in advance, Anatole

Is it possible to export documentation for a subset of DB objects?

David · 6 · Last reply by Piotr Tokarski

    Hi,

I have this scenario: A co-worker has an "end point" view in my DB (he hooks up an Excel report to that view).

I've pulled the data flow to that end point by recursively walking the dependency tree in the database.

So, now I have a list of objects that show the end-to-end set of dependencies for that report.

I'd like to export a "sub-document" that includes only those objects.

However, when I go to the export GUI, I can only select full documentations, not a sub-set of objects inside.

I've tried modules but those output ERD's; in this

Best approach to create a data dictionary for Oracle?

David · 2 · Last reply by Piotr Tokarski

    All,

I want to create documentation for a few schemas in an oracle database. The output I'm trying to get in the left pane of the resulting document is as follows:

    • MyDatabase
      • Schema1
        • Tables
        • Views
        • Etc.
      • Schema2
        • Tables
        • Views
        • Etc.
      • Etc.

Is this even possible? I've tried several approaches but couldn't get this output.

If not, what is the best way to accomplish something similar, while meeting two key goals: - Documentation for both schemas should be available from the same URL. - Inter and intra schema dependencies should be captured and clickable in the "Uses/UsedBy" sections.

    I've tried the

Dataedo running on Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS)

David · 2 · Last reply by David

    By means of Wine (https://www.winehq.org/)

The reason to try this: half of us in our team use Windows PC's, the other half uses Mac's, and the production servers (the ones in which we would have to store documentation repositories and enable automation) run RHEL.

Is there something you guys can provide to support this kind of cross-platform scenarios? Even light-weight packages (no GUI) to enable automation on Linux systems would be great!

    Thanks a lot in advance,

Module Document: Limit Columns to those shown in ERD?

BrotBart · 2 · Last reply by BrotBart

Greetings, We have some pretty large tables. When I document just a module I'd like to include the tables, but only list the columns that are shown in the ERD (we don't include all columns, only the ones that are relevant to the ERD). Excluding columns that aren't involved in that Module/ERD. Can it be done?

I show an example in a blog post at the bottom https://www.sheldonhull.com/blog/documenting-your-database-with-diagrams

I like the modules organization, but would like to know what you'd do to associate a "concept" with several modules and show the relationship and how they work together since modules are meant to be self-contained?

How to add tables from different databases to the diagram (cross-DB relations)?

    Emma_Clark · 2 · Last reply by Emma_Clark

Hi, I recently upgraded to Dataedo 6.0. I read that I can now make cross-DB relations. But I can't find a way to do it. I have imported three different DBs, but when I move to ERD diagram, I can only pick tables from only the one I'm currently in. Is this feature implemented? Emma

    User defined relations

gkavya · 4 · Last reply by Piotr Tokarski

Hi, I was trying to create a relation between 2 tables in a single database as well as 2 tables from different databases. But the only relation I can add is a PK and FK, which is essentially not the case here. These tables are kind of simple dependencies on a column. Example 1 : Table A and Table B have certain columns which together form Table C or some joins need to be shown. Is there a way I can depict them in my ER diagrams.

    Thanks in advance.

    Multiple Databases for ER diagram

Hi, I was creating an ER diagram for a process and it needs multiple databases to be used as the tables are spread in different servers or different databases. Is there a possibility to connect different instances of a database to form an ER diagram.

    Thank you in advance.

Assigning License to a user on a different PC

    Hi,

We have a license for one user for dataedo to manage DB documentation. The colleague who manages the documentation is leaving soon so we would like to pass this responsibility on to another user/PC.

We have tried removing the license from the user on the existing PC from admin console, as well as assigning a free license, but have not yet been successful in applying the license to another user on a different PC. The message is "Maximum number of 1 user licenses from this key has been exceeded. If you'd like to assign this key to this user

    Dataedo Installation Requirements

GaryAMiller · 1 · Last reply by Piotr Tokarski

Does Dataedo have to install anything on the database server to function or need to create any tables or other database objects on the server side of the database?

My clients are very sensitive about allowing the installation of any third-party tools or anything that may alter or create a risk for their production environments.
